How do you say "caramel?" Do you pronounce it "care a mel" or "car mel?" While on vacation with one of my friends last summer, we got into this long coversation about the way different parts of the country pronounce different words.

Well, I say care-mel and that's not "the proper" way to say it...I am totally okay with that. Regardless of how you pronounce caramel, thisSea Salt Caramel Bars Recipe is super delicious!

Sea Salt Caramel Bars Recipe

When the sea salt and caramel combo blew up on the foodie scene a few years ago, I laughed and thought I'd never try it. I mean, really, salt?

Yuck! I've never been a fan of salty foods, and the salty sweet combination just grossed me out.

I'd like to eat my potato chips and chocolate totally separate, thank you very much.

And then...and then I tried it. And I was a goner.

While I still prefer my sweets totally separate, I do love the combo of caramel and sea salt! Throw a few chocolate chips in there and it's even better!

Instructions

Heat oven to 350. Line an 8x8 baking pan with foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

In a large bowl, melt the butter using the microwave. I always start with 60 seconds at 50% power and then stir to melt completely. Add sugar and egg and vanilla and mix well. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and mix. Fold in chocolate chips.

Spread batter into pan and sprinkle with sea salt.

Bake 20-25 minutes until browned and toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.

Remove bars from pan. Remove foil from bars and cut. Makes about 16-20 bars.

I have to admit, I'm a fan, especially if it involves chocolate with the sea salt and caramel. Those little Ghirardelli Sea Salt Caramel Dark Chocolate squares are my favorite! These look so scrumptious. Definitely pinning to make. Thank you for sharing at Inspire Me Wednesday. Featuring you in this week's issue.

These look wonderful! We have the pronunciation issue here too... after all there IS that vowel "a" in the middle... do we just ignore it? or pronounce it? It's one of those Vase or Vaz topics. 🙂

  5. Margaret

These look so easy, and yet so delicious. I actually use both pronunciations (who knows why?). When it's in sauce form I call it car-a-mel, when it's in solid form, it's car-mel. 😉

I'm craving for these caramel bars! Looks very tasty and appealing to the eyes. I'm gonna make one, I promise. By the way, what can I use to spray the pan instead of a nonstick cooking spray?

  17. Aliesha

I always use a bit of butter on a paper towel to grease my pans instead of using nonstick cooking spray! Even just the wrapper left from unwrapping a stick of butter works great!

  18. Cathy

Yes! Or you can have thinner bars by using the same recipe in a larger pan.
