In 1933 New York City, a woman returns to her apartment and is confronted by three gangsters who demand to know the whereabouts of her boyfriend, David “Noodles” Aaronson. She claims not to know, and they kill her. The men receive a tip that Noodles is at a Chinese theater. However, they fail to realize he is in the opium den in back. Reclining on a mat, Noodles clutches a newspaper announcing the deaths of three bootleggers. He recalls walking past the crime scene and watching police tag one of the badly burned bodies, “Maximilian Bercovicz.” Smoking the pipe, Noodles remembers the last time he saw his three friends alive. Suddenly, an attendant warns him about the gangsters in the theater. Noodles leaves undetected, and in the morning, retrieves a key from his friend, “Fat Moe.” He goes to a train station to claim a suitcase, discovering nothing but newspapers inside. Dazed, he buys a one-way ticket to Buffalo, New York. Thirty-five years later, Noodles returns and visits Fat Moe, re

Just about all the incidents in this three-hour-and-forty-seven-minute film echo scenes in Hollywood gangster movies, but the director, Sergio Leone, inflates them, slows them down, and gives them a dreamy obsessiveness. He transmutes the lower East Side settings of those gangster movies to give the genre a richer, more luxuriant visual texture. His widescreen view of a group of Jewish kids who start with petty crime and move into big-time racketeering is set in 1921, 1933, and 1968, but not in that order. His theme is the betrayal of the immigrants’ dream of America, and the story begins and ends in an opium den where Noodles (Robert De Niro) puffs on a pipe while episodes of his life of killings and rapes and massacres drift by and a telephone rings somewhere in the past. This epic is a compendium of kitsch, but it’s kitsch aestheticized by someone who loves it and sees it as the poetry of the masses. It isn’t just the echoing moments that keep you absorbed—it’s the reverberant dreamland settings and Leone’s majestic, billowing sense of film movement. With Jennifer Connelly, who’s marvellously vivid as the young Deborah; Darlanne Fluegel as the beautiful streamlined blond Eve; and Tuesday Weld, who brings a gleam of perversity to the role of a moll.

Once Upon a Time in America (Italian: C'era una volta in America) is a 1984 drama film co-written and directed by Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods with music by Ennio Morricone. David "Noodles" Aaronson struggles as a street kid in a neighborhood on Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1918. He and his friends Patrick "Patsy" Goldberg, Philip "Cockeye" Stein and Dominic commit petty crimes under the supervision of local boss, Bugsy. Planning to rob a drunk as a truck hides them from a police officer, they're foiled by Maximillian "Max" Bercovicz, who jumps off the truck to rob the man himself. Noodles confronts Max, but a crooked police officer steals the watch that they are fighting over. Later, Max blackmails the police officer, who is having sex with Peggy, a young girl and Noodles' neighbor. Max, Noodles, Patsy, Dominic and Cockeye start their own gang, independent of Bugsy, who had previously enjoyed the police officer's protection........

This was a murdered movie, now brought back to life on home video. Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America", which in its intended 227-minute version is an epic poem of violence and greed, was chopped by ninety minutes for U.S. theatrical release into an incomprehensible mess without texture, timing, mood, or sense. The rest of the world saw the original film, which I saw at the Cannes Film Festival. In America, a tragic decision was made. When the full-length version (now available in cassette form) played at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, I wrote:
